What is Feng Shui?

You've probably heard the term Feng Shui before. However, not everyone knows its true meaning or the role it can play in our homes and our lives. In this article, we’ll explore what this concept really means and how it can contribute to improving our space, with the help of our ambassador and decoration expert, Inês Rodrigues.

The Five Elements

Feng Shui considers the interaction between five fundamental elements, each representing a distinct type of energy:

  • Wood: symbolizes growth, vitality, and creativity. It is represented by plants and furniture and is associated with colors like green and brown.
  • Fire: symbolizes passion, energy, and transformation. It is represented by candles, strong lighting, and warm tones such as red and orange.
  • Earth: symbolizes stability, security, and nourishment. It is represented by ceramics, terracotta, and earthy tones like light yellow, brown, and beige.
  • Metal: symbolizes clarity, precision, and organization. It is represented by metallic objects and colors like white and gray.
  • Water: symbolizes tranquility, freshness, and abundance. It brings calm and relaxed energy and is associated with colors like blue and black.

Bagua: The Home’s Energy Map

The Bagua is one of the most important tools in Feng Shui. It’s an octagonal map that divides the home into nine distinct areas (including the center, which represents health), with each one corresponding to a compass direction. For example, North represents career and East represents family. Practically speaking, the idea is to overlay the Bagua map onto the home’s floor plan to identify which spaces correspond to each life area, allowing you to intentionally adjust your décor.

How to Apply Feng Shui?

To incorporate Feng Shui at home, it’s important to understand the concept of chi – the vital energy that flows through environments. A free and balanced flow of chi is essential to create a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. Here are some practical tips:

  • Organization and cleanliness: clutter-free environments help the energy flow.
  • Balanced colors: choose color palettes that convey the desired feeling – soft tones to relax, vibrant colors to energize.
  • Natural elements: plants, stones, and wood help connect the home to nature.

According to our decoration expert, Inês Rodrigues, “a careful choice of colors in your décor not only influences your mood but also helps direct the right energy to each area of the house.”

“More than just decorative elements, plants have the power to transform a space, making it more welcoming and full of life. Beyond their natural beauty, their selection can (and should!) follow Feng Shui principles, ensuring that each species contributes to the well-being and harmony of the home.”

The Rooms of the House

  • Entrance: this is the point where energy enters. Use pots with healthy plants to attract welcome and prosperity.
  • Living room: create a cozy environment with ceramic pots in neutral tones that promote balance and serenity.
  • Kitchen: as a space of nourishment, terracotta pots are a great choice to reinforce the connection to the earth and stability.
  • Bedroom: prioritize rest and calm with rounded pots and plants with soft leaves.
  • Office: for focus and clarity, choose metallic or recycled plastic pots in sober tones.

Pots in Feng Shui

More than just decorative elements, pots play a fundamental role in the application of Feng Shui, as they are vessels of life and energy. When used to hold plants, they bring the wood element – a symbol of growth and vitality – into the home. However, the role of pots goes far beyond just supporting plants. They represent containment, nourishment, and transformation, and help direct chi energy in a harmonious way.

The shape, material, and color of the pots also directly influence the energy they attract and distribute within the space. Choosing the right pot depends on the type of energy you want to enhance:

  • Ceramic pots: connected to the Earth element, they promote stability, nourishment, and balance.
  • Terracotta pots: represent tradition and connection to Nature, ideal for creating a solid energy foundation.
  • Recycled plastic pots: modern and versatile, they reinforce innovation and lightness, with a practical and renewable energy.

According to Inês Rodrigues, “choosing the right pot is just as important as choosing the plant. Rounded shapes promote softness, while taller pots bring an energy of ascension and growth.”
